“Um, miss” a man’s voice called.

I turned, and then wished I hadn’t.

Two men stood beside a fancy SUV with brand-new kayaks tied to the top. Neither of them was looking at me; they both were staring at the car.

Personally, I didn’t get it. But then, I was just proud I could distinguish between the symbols for Toyota, Ford and Chevy. This car was glossy black, sleek, and pretty, but it was still just a car to me.

“I’m sorry to bother you, but could you tell me what kind of car you’re driving?” the tall one asked.

“Um, a Mercedes, right?”

“Yes,” the man said politely while his shorter friend rolled his eyes at my answer.

“I know. But I was wondering, is that… are you driving a Mercedes Guardian?”  The man said the name with reverence. I had a feeling this guy would get along well with Edward Cullen, my… my fiancé(there really was no getting around that truth with the wedding just day away). “They aren’t supposed to be available in Europe yet,” the man went on, “let alone here.”

While his eyes traced the contours of my car- it didn’t look much different from any other Mercedes sedan to me, but what did I know?-I briefly contemplated my issues with words like fiancé, wedding, husband, etc.

I just couldn’t put it together in my head.

On the one hand, I had been raised to cringe at the very thought of poofy white dresses and bouquets. But more than that, I just couldn’t reconcile a staid, respectable, dull concept like husband with my concept of Edward. It was like casting an archangel as an accountant; I couldn’t visualize him in any commonplace role.

Like always, as soon as I started thinking about Edward I was caught up in a dizzy spin of fantasies. The stranger had to clear his throat to get my attention; he was still waiting for an answer about the car’s make and model.

“I don’t know,” I told him honestly.

“Do you mind if I take a picture with it?

It took me a second to process that “Really? You want to take a picture with the car?”

“Sure-nobody is going to believe me if I don’t get proof.”

“Um. Okay. Fine.”

 

“엄, 아가씨” 한 남자의 목소리가 들려왔다.

뒤를 돌아보니 내가 원치 않는 두 명의 남자가 새 카얏을 차위에 올려 둔 매력적인 SUV옆에 서 있었다. 그들 중 한 명이 나를 보고 있었다. 그들 모두 내 차를 응시하고 있었다.

개인적으로 나는 이런 것을 원하지 않는다. 하지만 나는 토요타, 포트, 쉐비의 심볼을 구분할 수 있었다는 것이 자랑스러웠다. 이 차는 광이나는 검은색에 매끄럽게 빠져서 매우 예뻤다. 그치만 이것은 나에게 그저 차일뿐이다.

“귀찮게 해서 미안한데요. 당신이 운전하고 있는 차 종류가 무엇인지 얘기해줄 수 있나요?” 키 큰 남자가 물었다. “음 메르세데스 맞죠?” “맞아” 그의 작은 키의 친구가 눈을 굴리며 나의 대답을 기다리는 동안 그가 공손하게 말했다.

“내가 알고 있기는 한데 궁금해서요 그 차 당신이 운전하는 것 메르세데스 가디언이죠?” 그는 숭배하듯 그 이름을 말했다. 나는 이 남자가 에드워드 컬린 나의 약혼자와 잘 어울린 것 같다는 느낌이 들었다. (사실 단지 그날이 지나고 결혼식과 함께한 진실 말고 얻는 것이 없었다) “그들은 아직 유럽에서는 유용하지 않다고 했죠” 그 남자가 걸어 왔다. “홀로 여기에만”

그의 눈이 차의 윤곽을 따라 가는 동안 나에는 다른 메르세데스 세단과 별다를 바 없어 보였다. 그러나 내가 무엇을 알겠는가? 나는 잠시 약혼자, 결혼, 남편 등과 같은 단어를 떠올리느라 생각에 잠겼다.

나는 내 머리 속에 모든 것을 집어 넣을 수 없었다.

한쪽손위에 나는 증명의 하얀 드레스와 부케 생각에 움츠린 채 일어섰다 그러나 그것보다 더 나은 지루하고, 점잖고, 둔한듯한 컨셉 마치 남편 에드워드의 컨셉 과 조화를 이룰 수 없었다. 그것은 회계원 못지 않게 천사장으로서 배역이 정해진 것 같았다. 나는 어떤 흔한 관습에서 그를 상상할 수 없었다.

늘그랬던 것 처럼, 나는 에드워드에 관해 생각을 시작하는순간 나는 환상곡의 아찔한 회전을 잡았다. 그가 나의 집중에 그의 목소리로 깨웠다. 그는 여전히 차의 제조사와 모델의 답변을 기다렸다.

“난 잘 몰라요” 나는 솔직히 그에게 얘기했다.

“내가 이 차와 사진을 찍어도 될까요?”

몇 초가 흐른 후 “정말? 이 차와 함께 사진 찍기를 원하나요?”

“물론이예요. 어떤 사람도 내가 증명할 것이 없다면 나를 믿지 않을거예요”
